Halo: Campaign Evolved is a full remake of the original 2001 campaign, casting players once again as the Master Chief as he battles the alien Covenant across the mysterious ringworld known as Halo. The remake adds three new prequel missions collectively titled Operation METEORITE, set one year before the main campaign and following Master Chief and Sergeant Avery Johnson on a separate military operation, expanding the story beyond the original release.
Built on Unreal Engine 5, the remake modernizes the classic first-person shooter with mechanics drawn from later entries in the series: a toggleable sprint for players who want the classic feel, the ability to hijack and commandeer enemy vehicles including tanks, and nine additional weapons pulled from subsequent Halo titles such as energy swords and the fuel rod cannon. Forty-two collectible skull modifiers, 26 returning and 16 new, let players customize runs with effects ranging from weapon randomizers to a full third-person camera, and the campaign supports four-player online co-op with cross-platform play and cross-progression, plus two-player local split-screen.
This release marks Halo's first arrival on PlayStation hardware, alongside its Xbox Series X|S and PC launch. The team rebuilt missions and cinematics from the ground up with re-recorded dialogue from members of the original voice cast and a remastered score, while preserving core elements of the original Blam engine to keep the series' distinctive physics and AI behavior intact.
